A while back, a friend came to me asking whether I knew any Joomla component that would display the pictures from a Flickr group. Preferably, it should be "flashy". When hearing "picture" and "flashy" in one sentence, I immediately think of Lightbox. Unfortunately, I did not know such a Joomla component (not even one that would do the group-thing at all). However, I found the challenge interesting, and the same evening, I had rolled my own.
My friend (Demelza van der Lans, for whom I also created www.demelzavanderlans.nl) is involved in getting all the pictures of the International Mini Meeting 2008 onto Flickr, and from there onto the event's website. The idea was inspired by the site of Mini United, an event much like the IMM, but organized by Mini and with the emphasis on new Mini. There, photo's on the site are from visitors of the event, who uploaded their pictures to Flickr.
Although I created it a while back, the official photo's had to be organized. Now that's finished, though, and the component has been added to the IMM website. The component organizes thumbnails it retrieves from Flickr into pages. When a thumbnail is clicked, a lightbox opens to show the "normal" version of the photo (i.e. the 500 pixel version). The caption in the lightbox includes the title, the owner of the picture, and a link to the Flickr photo page (not only useful for people that would like to get different sized versions, but also needed to be in compliance with the Flickr terms of use).
In addition to the IMM site, the component can also be seen in action here, on my own site. (It's in a hidden menu, though, you will not be able to navigate to it through the usual navigation controls).
